Cosmedix Advanced Skin Treatments
Cosmedix offer a range of metabolic peels which means they work with the natural process of the skin, using non-aggressive acids to achieve results without compromising the integrity of the skin barrier or its health.
Chirally correct hydroxy acids and botanical extracts help neutralize the skin so large molecules like Retinol can penetrate the surface layer and convert into retinoic acid.

Radiofrequency skin tightening is a non surgical method of tightening your skin. The procedure involves using energy waves to heat the deeper level of the skin known as the dermis. The heat stimulates the production of collagen, the actual source of the heat is the frictional resistance of the tissue, by doing this we can contract the collagen fibres, resulting in an immediate skin tightening affect as well as delayed collagen synthesis, meaning the results are both instant and cumulative. [Maternity Leave]
With Autumn already here,my upcoming maternity leave has arrived sooner than expected. As most of my regular clients are already aware my last day in clinic is 19th October. All clients will be emailed this week with the upcoming changes going forward. All vouchers will be honoured on in clinic treatments up to this date then outstanding vouchers can be redeemed on product only after this date.

[Skincare in Pregnancy]
During pregnancy you will experience a lot of changes in your body due to the surge of hormones including changes to your skin. Your skin can experience anything from hormonal acne to dry/flaky patches, psoriasis, eczema and chloasma (dark areas of pigmentation known as the pregnancy mask). You may of never had troublesome skin in your life but pregnancy can definitely be a trigger for most of us not only on the face but the body too.
There are certain products that should be avoided in pregnancy including Retinoids,Salicylic acids (in certain percentages)and specific in clinic treatments which can increase a risk to your unborn baby due to lack of clinical data so always best to keep your routine gentle. You may also find that certain products in your routine suddenly become irritating to the skin in which case you need to stop using.
A simple pregnancy skin routine should include a gentle cleanser Am/Pm, cream cleanser if your on the dryer side and a gentle gel cleanser if your finding your skin is oilier (without acids or harsh exfoliating ingredients)if you like to double cleanse then jojoba oil is a nice option as it contains nothing artificial that will cause irritation. Plenty of hydration is important to keep the skin balanced and nourished so look for a good low weight hyaluronic acid based serum or moisturiser that also contains ingredients like glycerin, Niacinamide and vit B5 (panthenol).
Choose a gentle exfoliation, we love skin formulas oatfoliant as it aids gentle exfoliation whilst soothing and hydrating the skin.
SPF as always is a non negotiable but opting for a gentle physical (mineral based) SPF that does not contain chemical filters is the best option.
If your unsure on what you should/shouldn’t be using in your skin routine during pregnancy and need some advice on how to get the healthiest canvas then it’s best to book in for a consultation to get you on the right track. Whilst a simple and gentle routine is best some skin may be experiencing more complex issues and need that something extra to get things under control.

[Melasma]
Melasma can be triggered by many causes including hormones, genetic predisposition, contraceptive medications, stress and other internal conditions. It can be one of the trickiest skin conditions to treat and if you suffer from Melasma you will notice the condition worsens in the summer months when your exposed to the sun and heat as it is triggered when exposed to heat and UV.
Although one of the most difficult conditions to treat as it’s dermal, the good news is that it can be effectively treated with the correct products and treatments resulting in a brighter more even skin tone. A few of my recommended in clinic treatments and products are as follows,
1. Meso Microneedling with vitamin infusion.
2. Medical grade skin peels.
3. A prescriptive home care routine & Mineral SPF.

As we approach the official summer months just a little reminder of the importance of protecting our skin with adequate SPF protection. Sun damage presents in many forms of which include,
• Skin Cancer
• premature ageing, loss of volume and glycation.
• pigmentation, melasma and uneven skin tone.
• Actinic Keratosis
• skin sensitisation
Prevention is key to protecting your skin to maintain a healthy, youthful complexion. Most people are pretty savvy now when it comes to being aware of the harmful effects of UV and that wearing a daily SPF 30 or above is non negotiable but it’s crucial to be aware on the hotter days during summer when the UV is higher and the risk of sun damage is more prevalent that we need to reapply especially when outdoors, wear a sun hat and glasses for extra protection of the face and eyes and try to avoid the peak hours between 12-3 when UV rays are at their highest.
SPF protection isn’t just for the summer months we should be wearing it 365 days as part of our daily skincare routine, yes even when there’s no sun as where there’s light there’s UV (ultraviolet) rays which continue to break down skin cells which leads to the degradation of collagen & elastin and accelerates premature ageing.

As we head into spring it’s important to have a spring clean out of our skincare products too, making sure we are not using products past their sell by date where you should be able to find either somewhere on the bottom of the packaging or via the batch number. Products past their expiry are not only less effective but also have potential for bacteria growth.

The images above show a before and after picture spaced only 6 weeks apart of a beautiful client that came into me for a skin consultation with specific skin concerns of inflammation and an impaired barrier, having consultations previously and after trialling an array of recommended products she unfortunately wasn’t seeing the results she had hoped for.
We had in depth consultation and stripped back all of the existing skincare products she was currently using. After recommending three prescriptive products only, no in clinic treatments and her consistency with use of the products the results speak for themselves.

[Neck & Décolletage]
The neck and décolletage is an area of concern for many of my clients, when it comes to skincare were nearly all guilty of neglecting these delicate areas and it’s one of the main areas that will experience ageing and lax skin first. As the delicate skin is much thinner on the neck and décolletage it also has less oil glands than that of the face resulting in the skin ageing in this area at a visibly faster pace.
Treat your neck & décolletage with the same TLC as your face, incorporating your cleanse, exfoliation, antioxidants, serums, masks and that all important SPF every day. You can also incorporate your PM routine down onto the neck, if your using a retinol gently does it as the skin is thinner so a small amount at a low concentration to avoid any irritation then lots of hydration.
When it comes to treatments for the neck area a neck firming cream isn’t going to solve every concern unfortunately, yes they can help to smooth the texture of the skin, hydrate and plump but they won’t perform miracles. The best results I see are from incorporating good home care products,being consistent along with micro needling to produce more collagen and elastin, regular in clinic facials using technologies like Radiofrequency and Microcurrent and profhilo to really see long term visible results and a more youthful appearance to the overall area.

The best part of this job is when clients tell me how happy they are with the visible changes they begin to see with their skin after a few weeks or months of starting on a personalised skincare routine and in clinic treatments.
It’s not just about the visual results but the self confidence they gain once they see their skin start to transform and flourish into its healthiest version.

Why the name Oceanskin?
Well, it was the name chosen for my clinic from day one as I’ve lived very close to the ocean my whole life, even from my childhood days living in the Med where the ocean and the beach is just a way of everyday life.
Seawater contains lots of beneficial substances like magnesium, potassium, zinc, iodine, calcium, sodium and iron. These minerals can be highly beneficial for conditions like eczema and psoriasis and other immune mediated conditions, it also significantly speed up the healing process.
The sound of the ocean and waves have been proven to be so therapeutic that they release the feel-good chemicals serotonin and dopamine in the brain, stimulating a feeling of calm, wellbeing, and happiness.
I love the sound the smell and the uplifting feeling the ocean brings, it’s a place to clear my mind and gather my thoughts to feel truly revitalised and recharged.

[Skin cell turnover]
The average adult skin cell turnover is between 25-28 days but as we age this natural process of cell desquamation and renewal slows down dramatically, meaning our complexion can look dull and the tone and texture, uneven and rough to the touch.
A common concern I hear from a lot of my clients is that they feel there skin looks dull and that the texture isn’t soft and supple as it used to be.
Adding in a chemical exfoliant or a suitable type of Retinoid to your skin care routine can make the world of visible difference to your skin and it’s overall health.
Exfoliation helps to remove the matured cells sitting on the surface of the outer most part of our epidermis, leaving the skin smoother, brighter and more youthful.
I think most of us at this point have heard of the most talked about anti ageing, buzz ingredient on the block, I’m of course talking about Vitamin A otherwise known as Retoinic acid, Retinol, Retinaldehyde, Retinol Palmitate etc, lots of different forms that are formulated and tolerated by the skin differently. This buzz ingredient speeds up our cell turnover but has another whole host of skin benefits another post on that one later.
Another great ingredient in your routine for sure but not every skin can tolerate it and going in hard with this ingredient definitely won’t give you those desired results only irritation, peeling and discomfort if not used properly so start low and go slow, have a consultation with your skin care professional to find out the best one that’s most suitable for your skin. 🍃

A little introduction for those of you who don’t already know me. My name is Rachel, founder of Oceanskin, I’m a self confessed skincare hoarder and passionate about all things skin.
After a decade long career in banking I decided to pursue my passion and love for skin.
Over the last six years I have worked within the beauty industry as a beauty consultant & accounts manager, Beautician and skin therapist. Training in some of the biggest leading skincare lines in the UK, Italy and Ireland today.
After completing a diploma in Beauty & Cosmetology I have continued to train in the UK in advanced Skincare & treatments, upskilling my qualifications to a CIBTAC level 4.

[A little trip]
We will be out of office from Friday 1st October and back as usual Wednesday 6th. I will be taking a little trip across the pond to the UK to do some training on new treatments coming to the clinic very soon.

[Seasonal Skincare]
As the leaves are changing so should our skincare. Your skin changes multiple times daily but as we head into the cooler months skin changes can become more visible and apparent.
As the temperature drops outside, we crank up the heating inside which leads to low humidity. With the combination of cold commutes, central heating and hot showers, the skins natural moisture barrier is disrupted and this can lead to trans epidermal water loss, showing as dry, flaky, sensitised skin.
Introducing gentle acids for exfoliation, moisturisers with hydrating, nourishing and barrier protection properties along with facial oils and ceramides will not only nourish the skin but will also improve moisture retention in the long haul.

[Recharge]
After a weeks holiday to recharge my batteries I’m back in the studio fully recharged, skin focused and ready for some training on new things to come.
Sometimes rest and taking a break is the most productive thing we can do not only for our physical well being but our mental well being too. Recharging isn’t just for our phones but as human beings the body and mind need to recharge regularly to function their best.
Recharging the mind and body has many benefits that include, reducing stress levels, increasing creativity and strengthening of the immune system so even if your not taking a holiday try to incorporate some recharge time into your daily routine whether it be a walk, reading or just taking a little time for yourself to simply unwind.
